Is "Duty of Care" on your Mind?
Market research supports the belief that business travelers and their families are increasingly apprehensive to travel for business, especially when reminded of the indiscriminate nature of health, travel and security related risk. Nomadz®, a mobile, BlackBerry® -based assistance service that proactively sends timely and location-specific travel, health and security alerts to mobile professionals, was developed to address these concerns.

Medical Insurance Costs Increase for Service Organizations
Despite legislation recently passed to bring costs in line, providing medical insurance continues to grow increasingly expensive for service employers across the country.  The newly released 2010 Compensation Data Services survey results show service organizations had an average premium increase of 10.8 percent.

Slater's Bold, Budweiser Slide Farewell Underscores the Importance of Daily Employee Recognition
Many of you have probably kept up with the questionable, but wildly supported actions of Steven Slater, the JetBlue flight attendant who finally had had enough of obnoxious customers and job stress. Slater did what many workers fantasize about and may do with increasing frequency - albeit with less showmanship - once the economy rebounds. "I don't think we should be surprised that once the economy starts ... picking up, there's a massive relocation of workers who want out as fast as they possibly can," says economist Joel Naroff.

After Discovered Evidence not Sufficient
A Minnesota Federal District Court recently ruled that, consistent with some other opinions, after acquired evidence of purported misrepresentation on a health history form (alcoholism), might limit remedies, but could not be used to defeat a drug dependency claim under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Human Rights Act.

Laughter can be a Cure for Workplace Ills

On a national level, employee satisfaction, worker productivity and customer service continue to be priority items for managers, supervisors and human resource professionals. A survey published by Training and Development magazine revealed that 84% of HR managers said employees with a sense of humor do better work and 97% of executives agree that humor is valuable in business. Additionally, studies have proven that humor greatly reduces stress. So why don't more companies encourage humor at work?.

Focus on Positive Leadership – When Things Go Wrong

Are you appreciated by company managers? Do you have the opportunity to do your best work? Most of us start a job motivated to perform our best, but sometimes working for an ineffective manager can negatively affect your motivation. Positive leaders help people tap into their intrinsic motivation to improve performance.

Where's the Merit in Merit Pay?

Irrational. Some days, does it seem like that's the best word to describe the workplace? I tend to like Dan Ariely's research on irrationality. Initial research showed, “In eight of the nine tasks, the promise of a bigger bonus actually significantly decreased people's performance.” Why was the study structured this way? Because cash bonuses become an expectation.

Candidate Screening - Are Your Results Really Useful?

In Part 1 of this two-part Article, the author provided ideas and suggestions concerning the kinds of information you might want to collect and assess from candidates applying on-line to an open job. It becomes necessary to weigh the information provided from the candidate to determine who most closely matches the credentials of the “ideal person” for your position. To handle this correctly, you need to indicate the relationship of each data point you collect against the answer you have judged as “ideal” for the candidate you want to hire.

New time management techniques, from the world of sports? Yes!
Time management remains a core focus within leadership, coaching and mentoring programs. Inevitably, to keep the subject fresh, new buzz words and soon-to-be clichés pop up to put new clothes on old concepts. The newest label I like, and hope it sticks: “Energy Management” is an essential element of time management. Used effectively by successful athletes, energy management is something managers seldom think about, other than the old mantra “Do the hard stuff at your sharpest time of the day.”

> Leading the Virtual Workforce - Summary

Institutional frameworks today are fueled by highly skilled and specially trained workers who are often spread out across great distances and communicate horizontally instead of vertically. Many organizations have not been able to effectively implement leadership models or performance standards that take advantage of this vast virtual array. In Leading the Virtual Workforce, Karen Sobel Lojeski addresses this global leadership crisis and makes the case that old leadership models need to be reshaped for today's virtual workforce.
