Repeat customers are the foundation of sustainable business growth, yet the task of meeting customer demands has become increasingly complex. Volatile business conditions, economic challenges and rising competition are among some of the stresses that businesses face today. Like it or not, instability and change are here to stay. Business futurist, Dr. James Canton, predicts that the keys to sustainable business growth for organizations of the future include the ability to manage complexity, to be highly agile, and to deal with “global connectivity” and changing consumer demographics. Canton writes “developing a capacity to see what's next and prepare by monitoring trends, developing business foresight with an eye towards the longer more strategic view will be essential to success in 2009” (2008). To develop the organizational capabilities necessary to meet these demands of the future, organizations need the following:

• transformational, collaborative leadership;
• a culture of innovation;
• an intense focus on the needs of the customer.

Since this management style represents a departure from the traditional top-down approach, it may require a significant shift for most organizations and their senior leaders.
