HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE RESEARCH:
Experience and reputation are the top reasons for selecting external coaches
Experience is the most widely chosen (58%), which is a 15-percentage point increase from our 2020 survey. Organizations seek out coaches with a strong track record of successful engagements. Reputation is the second most frequently chosen criterion. In many cases, external coaches are selected based on their reputed success with other individuals or organizations. Reputation is followed by two other criteria: credentials and rates/fees.
Roughly a third of organizations have increased coaching and mentoring efforts since the start of the pandemic
Just over a third (34%) say that coaching has increased at least a little since the start of the pandemic, and 30% say the same about mentoring. Organizations are likely recognizing the need for employee development during the turbulence brought on by the pandemic, with some adopting virtual coaching/mentoring. In contrast, only 23% say that coaching has decreased and just 25% say mentoring has decreased.
