Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Reigniting Today's Dangerously stalled prevention programs
MARCH 2018
Sexual harassment and abuse have been widely reported in the news in recent months. Is this having an impact on workplace policies and training? This important study with input from over 1,200 HR professionals found that many employees lack a solid understanding of sexual harassment policies. In fact, only about a third of respondents report that the vast majority of their employees fully understand company policies. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE RESEARCH:
In today's workplace, progress in this area has stalled. Only 13% of respondents said there had been a decrease in harassment complaints over the past two years, while about as many (15%) said there had been increases. The majority (73%) report it has remained the same.
Twenty-nine percent of all organizations expect to see an increase in complaints over the next twelve months, whereas just 12% expect a decrease. Over half (59%) expect complaints to remain the same. In one sense, this might indicate we are going backwards. In another sense, it may mean that victims have become more likely to speak up.
All the training and polices in the world cannot alone solve the problem of harassment. There needs to be a company-wide culture of inclusivity and respect. Victims need to be assured they can bring incidents to the attention of others and feel safe in doing so.
