The State of Women in Leadership 2020: Prioritize the development of women leaders to help shatter the glass ceiling once and for all

    APRIL 2020
There are gender gaps everywhere, even in the views about women in leadership. For example, about seven in ten U.S. women say too few women work in high political offices and in top executive business positions. However, only about half of U.S. men say the same.1 Most of us have a perspective about the numbers of women in leadership roles that are rooted in personal experience and conversations with colleagues, family and friends. We often wonder, “Exactly how many women are leaders in our organization now?” and, “How can we substantially increase gender diversity in the leadership ranks?”To better understand the degree to which organizations are employing women in leadership positions, HR.com’s HR Research Institute investigated a range of issues. We invite you to download and read the report and infographic today to learn how these outcomes and insights may apply to your organization, plus 10 key takeaways.

When asked about the percentage of women leaders in their organization, more than half of HR professionals (56%) say women represent somewhere between 0% to 30% of the organization's leaders. Only 13% say women represent 61% or more of the leaders.

Does HR Think It Can Influence the Level of Gender Diversity?

Only one-quarter feel HR can influence gender diversity to a great extent. Since most companies do not have the support of senior leaders outside of HR, it is somewhat understandable that only 26% of HR professionals say HR can increase the level of leadership diversity to a great extent. To contrast, 9% say that HR cannot influence the level of leadership gender diversity at all. About one-quarter (26%) have influence to a small extent, and two-fifths (39%) say they do to a moderate extent.

Do Mandates Exist to Increase the Number of Women Leaders?

Most companies do not require leaders to focus on increasing the percentage of women as leaders or HiPos. Only one-quarter (24%) have mandates to increase women leaders, and 21% say the same for HiPos. This is consistent with the finding that many organizations do not hold managers accountable for increasing gender diversity in the leadership ranks. A significant portion of respondents do not know the answer to this question. This may be because they are not privy to such information or because mandates are not openly discussed.
