New WFM Product?: Don’t crash and burn

Congratulations. You just bought a new workforce management product. It still has that new car smell, and you are wondering, “Will this product do everything the salesperson promised?” In a nutshell, no. Some of what you saw in the sales demo was not core product, it was tailored to meet your requirements. But do not despair, it happened to others and they worked through it. Here’s how you can too.

People First: Social dynamics, complexity, and the impact of change

It’s complicated. Could any other phrase be more indicative of today’s work environment? On one hand, the demand for more collaboration and innovation is sparking profound changes in the workplace. On the other, the nature of work itself is in flux. When these two elements combine, the question of how people will function in the workplace of the future takes center stage.

Surviving the Stress of Downsizing: How proper planning and implementation helps

In a rapidly changing economy, corporations may have to reduce the size of the full-time workforce. Corporate downsizing and the widespread effects of this organizational change are commonplace today. Most companies, however, do little to prepare their employees or help survivors deal with their attitude and emotions following the cutback.

Stop Hoarding Your Data!: Remember, there is life beyond that

Many of you may have seen the television show “Hoarders.” Our morbid curiosity gets the better of us, and we can’t help but watch, mesmerized by the dysfunction, in the extreme. Perhaps we think it could never happen to us. More than likely, we hoard just a little bit. Receipts accumulate until the pile becomes unruly. Business cards from 2006 are stuffed in a drawer. Pens and giveaway items get left in a box in the corner. These are relatively “normal” behaviors. A little hoarding isn’t dysfunctional, but in the extreme it can be a disaster. If you don’t archive your data – you may be a hoarder!

Attracting and Retaining Talent: Becoming an employer of choice

If you are an HR manager, imagine for a moment, if you had a million prospective employees knocking at your door looking for a job every single year. Surveys show that most people dread going to work every day. Imagine for a moment, what it would be like to work in an organization that is often more fun than being at home with your family. Are these two situations a pipe dream? No, it’s not a dream, it’s reality. Google, the iconic Californian- based search engine giant, is such a workplace. Consistently voted one of the best places to work in corporate America, Google receives 3,000 applications a day—which equates to one million applications a year—from people wanting a job. They are all chasing about 4,000 jobs. Employees who are lucky enough to work at Google claim that they often have more fun at work than at home. Yet Google is posting record profits. These remarkable features are no accident. Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman, believes that Google’s competitive advantage in the marketplace is not superior products and services: it is their workplace culture. Google is an employer of choice.
