Tsunamis and Business Analytics: Lessons to learn from Japan.

Revelations can come from the most unexpected places. A return trip to Japan last summer proved that more than the faces had changed. The tsunami that transformed the landscape there had revealed a surprising parallel in how people think and react.

Beware: The Use of Independent Contactors

For decades, there have been issues with businesses trying to understand what is and what is not permissible as it relates to classifying workers as independent contractors. In this economy, federal and state governments are looking for revenue wherever they can find it. It is clear that taxing authorities believe this issue could be a pot of gold, with estimates of lost tax revenue in the billions of dollars each year.

Ways to improve your antiquated HR Processes: How Legacy HR Tools are Killing More than the HR Team

I’m in sales and my battle since the creation of the cold call has been “just pick up the phone.” In the last decade, it’s become better as companies have come to understand that it’s more than a “smile and dial” game in our world. But there are still companies that have experienced sales reps (who can identify and help solve business problems, close, negotiate, up sell and hold relationships with executives) making 500 calls a month. Maybe not the best use of resources, but what happens on other sales teams isn’t my problem to solve.

It’s Not About the Money Always!: Devise operational strategy for boosting employee morale.

Over the past ten years, we’ve conducted an in-depth study into the attitudes of more than 100,000 shift workers at over 150 companies around the world. Through face to face surveys taken during work hours, we sought primarily to gather information about what employees like and dislike in their work environment, the changes they hope to see, health and safety issues and how work schedules impact personal lives. Of all the thousands of pieces of data we collected, one stood out: 81% of all employees surveyed felt that pay and benefits were good. In fact, while the importance of compensation paled, the connection between good management-employee communications and productivity was unassailable. In other words, while most companies try to inflate employee morale by shoveling more dollars at them, less expensive strategies will do.

Measuring and Managing Absenteeism: Tracking with outsourced absence management.

One of the most surprising findings from the Conference Board of Canada’s 2013 report Missing in Action: Absenteeism Trends in Canadian Organizations is the fact that, in 2012, more than half – 54% – of Canadian employers did not track employee absence. Given that the Conference Board estimates that the direct cost of absenteeism to the Canadian economy was $16.6 billion in 2012, absenteeism is a significant, yet often underestimated / overlooked cost driver.

The area of Workforce Management (WFM) has undergone significant change in recent years. Some of this change has come about due to advances in technology, and some due to the way modern businesses operate, compete and utilize labor resources. Workforce Management is essentially the process of balancing work requirements with available resources. It includes areas such as Time & Attendance, Labor Scheduling, and Absence Management. Workforce management solutions enable organizations to ensure that strategic objectives are met in an efficient, cost effective manner, while at the same time balancing the needs of the employees. The active involvement of the HR director in WFM projects has never been more important, due to the central role they play within businesses today.
