    70-20-10 Model For Learning And Development

    Effective learning is the blend of both formal and informal learning

    We all learn new things daily through our interactions, observations or by actual study. Learning is a lifelong process, which helps us to grow as an individual. There are multiple ways, an individual actually learns. 

     

    Formal learning happens in our schools, colleges, universities or institutions we go. It is a structured way of learning and development. Informal learning is something that occurs out of the classroom syllabus. It may be unintentional or unconscious as compared to the formal style of learning.

    Effective learning is the blend of both formal and informal learning. 70-20-10 model represents how we develop our skills and knowledge. It indicates the amount of experience, alignment, and training required to acquire the knowledge. These numbers are approximate values and may vary from an individual to individual or from an organization to organization.

    According to this model, 70% of our learning occurs through explicit experience acquired on job, or its experiential learning. It is usually through the new challenges or assignments and actions taken to accomplish them. The next 20% comes from our associations or social learning. It occurs through our interactions and activities with different people. These two methods are referred to as informal learning, because there is no specific pattern that is followed. Here, learning is generally self-directed without any conscious effort or plan and it constitutes to 90% of what we learn.

    The rest 10% of our learning comes down to formal learning. It occurs through a well-designed training sessions and a structured plan to achieve a learning outcome.

            

    So, does it means that our schools or the universities we went, constituted only 10% to our learning? No, it’s not the case. To exhibit our hidden potential, we need a strong groundwork on which 90% of our learning will be based. Formal learning provides us with the theoretical knowledge along with the actual facts which in turns act as a solid foundation for our sub conscious learning.
     
    The model is valuable for the organizations which invests in efficient training programs to enhance their employee effectiveness.

    The model indicates that the employees develop their talents, and upgrade their skillset more efficiently through hands-on training. It helps in improving the decision making abilities and approaching new challenges effectively. It enables brainstorming new ideas thus creating a healthy work environment. Providing and receiving immediate feedback plays a crucial role in learning.

    Learning cannot take place in isolation. Employees can learn a lot on social platforms and interactions. Immediate feedback plays a key role in social learning. Here, learning occurs through observation, motivation, sharing insights, and asking doubts.
     
    The model suggests that formal education accounts to mere 10 percent of our professional growth. But, formal education is significant part of any of the learning programs. It acts as the backbone and provides a collateral structure that leads to successful learning.

    A structured and a well-planned course can help the learners to upgrade their skillset and advance in their field of interest. Training that incorporates application based teachings and hands-on practice help learners to be more effective and efficient.

    It is indicative that the formal learning serves as an amplifier, maximizing the learning effects that occur through our informal learning.
