Today’s adult learners have their concentration pulled in more directions, have more responsibilities, and more methods of accessing their training than ever before. It’s essential that their training method acknowledges this and works with them.
Executives can reshape, and in some cases, manipulate organizational factors to develop learning within departmental and business units of organizations. Executives can, in fact, develop relationships in organizations and reshape organizational culture, through considering both employee’s individual interests and company’s essential needs.
Many companies view training as a “nice to have.” They think it is important to create an attractive, engaging training program for new hires, and that it might be good to have a focused course that teaches employees how to perform certain tasks or use certain pieces of company technology. Once those companies cover the bases by offering training in just a few areas like those, they turn the page and start to think about other realities of doing business.
Sometimes it takes a learning and development manager to point out that there’s no learning or development. What makes this question so interesting is that not every company has a learning and development manager. This company cares enough to put one in place. But she is not very optimistic: “Sorry, folks! If you keep it business as usual, I’ve got nothing to manage.”
Effective training is absolutely crucial for your workforce. Your business cannot succeed in this competitive environment if your employees do not upskill themselves on a regular basis. But, what should the platform be?
In addition to talent recruiting, performance reviews, and pay structure, training has been one of the core competencies provided by HR. With the rise of technology, training is no longer confined to class-room settings or online courses. It can be micro-training through mobile apps with snackable doses of information, virtual and interactive hands-on training, even just on-point educational videos on YouTube or topical-driven podcasts.
A sign of a stronger economy and a tight labor market has come with the new release of the May Jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the report, 223,000 jobs were added to the U.S economy this past May. The unemployment rate has also dropped to 3.8%, a new low since April 2000. Not to mention minimum wage is on the rise to $15 an hour in some states.
