At one time, I rolled around with a trunk full of software manuals and other training materials. As expected, these quickly became obsolete and eventually met their maker at a beachside bonfire. Yes, prior to 2002, I spent a significant amount of time on the road, delivering software training. After 9/11, based on budgets, an unknown economy, and other various reasons, the instructor-led training (ILT) deliveries and their related travel adventures significantly dwindled.

There is no doubt that training customer service employees is costly. A lot of resources are invested into training programs to ensure employees are aware of company policies and procedures, and are taught how to provide customer service that meets the expectations of the organization. Customers expect to receive standardized treatment from company representatives, which is why companies are starting to focus on coordinating multi-communication channels into a seamless omni-channel experience for customers. Creating an omni-channel presence doesn’t happen without a lot of targeted and strategic training though, and when companies invest in their training programs they want assurances that there will be a return on that investment.

“Cool” is a completely subjective concept—like “good” or “interesting.” Ask a thousand people what it means and you’ll get a thousand different answers. When we talk about designing eLearning for teens, our definition of cool is usually “that which appeals to people ages 13 to 21.” The truth is, teens and young adults are a very diverse group of people with different interests, maturity levels, backgrounds and tastes. There is no one thing that appeals to all members of that age group.
