Workplace E-learning That Sticks: Bite-size learning for the modern workforce

Workplace e-learning is on a roll. A study by the American Society for Training and Development found that e-learning currently accounts for over 37% of all workplace training hours. Even the U.S. Department of Labor has bought in, writing that “Technology-Based Learning holds the promise of substantially transforming the way learning takes place because of its numerous advantages...”

Remember the Learner!: Fundamental rules of learning when introducing new learning technologies

As the founder and director of a leading eLearning event, I have the chance to discover and appreciate all the marvelous new tools and technologies in our industry. Mobile Learning, serious games, social learning and collaboration applications all show great promise for learning. But sometimes I worry that the technology distracts us from the prime purpose and that we may be putting the cart before the horse.

Learning Management System: Tapping into the power of e-learning development tools

E-Learning development tools are special software applications that are used to develop e-Learning lessons. There are dozens available for purchase, but a handful predominate the market. They fall into three categories, but all allow for the inclusion of media and interactive elements, and all track progress through a Learning Management System.

Implementing Serious Learning Games: Familiar territory for training execs

Given that serious learning games represent unchartered territory for most training departments, it’s natural that many executives have questions about implementation. And there’s not much available information to go on. The market is still too young to easily find case studies or best-practice advice; peer groups are still largely focused on technology and “making the case.”

HR Already Has an LMS: Does safety need one too?

I don’t know if there are statistics on the percentage of organizations using a dedicated Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver and track safety training versus those using a traditional HR system. But I do know that, regardless of approach, this is an ongoing debate at many organizations.

Mobile to Soon Surpass Fixed Internet: Reasons for the growth of mobile technology

It goes without saying that mobile has grown quickly, but what most employers have not realized is just how quickly mobile has grown within their own employee population. This phenomenon has resulted in an enormous number of employers in the dark regarding the major shift that is about to take place in regards to employee communications.

To Train and How to Train: Common misconceptions about mobile training

When it comes to new technologies or fads in the training world, I usually step back and think about why or why they won’t succeed. A few years back, Podcasts were all the rage and everyone was going to be listening to their training. Then came about a dozen other fads like YouTube, Blogs, Wiki’s etc. I can’t tell you how many presentations I heard where the speaker described how everyone in the company was going to publish a blog and edit Wiki’s and how this would eventually replace formal training. The latest hype has been around Mobile Learning which I honestly thought was just as much of a fad as the others for training, but I may be wrong. In fact, I now believe it has real potential but not in the way it is currently being thought of.

E-Learning Solutions for Customized Learning: Challenges faced while developing e-courses

Training and Learning is an integral part of the corporate world and is a continuous process. But providing continuous training for specific learner requirements is often a challenge. For sudden and targeted learning needs, e-learning services are often the answer and customized e-learning solutions are effective. Customized courses are created for the training of a specific group and for a specific learning objective. It is need based and caters to the training in a specific topic or subject. Customized e-courses are courses that organizations prefer to develop through external companies who provide e-learning services. This makes sense at many different levels.

Bring the Emotions Live: Lights…camera… action…

Think back at the movies you’ve seen… What made that movie interesting for you? Most likely there were things like the actors, the movie set, the story line, maybe even the sound track. We love watching movies and often have discussions about them to our friends afterwards. Wouldn’t you love to see that same excitement before and after virtual trainings that you conduct online? Let’s rethink the way we design and implement our virtual trainings by using some of the example we see in the design of a movie.

Improving Motivation in E-learning: Helping learners to internalise their motivation

Motivation has been and continues to be a widely studied area across many of life’s domains. Motivation is said to be the energising force that initiates and sustains behaviour and ultimately produces results. Many motivation theories focus on the amount of motivation, with a larger quantity said to result in improved outcomes. However, as educators, we should not focus on generating more motivation from our learners but instead focus on creating conditions that facilitate the internalisation of motivation from within our learners.
