People, when they meet face-to-face and discuss issues, half the problems are solved. Although technology has played a great role in bringing people together virtually, nothing beats the power of getting people into the room together.
The biggest challenges leaders face today are complex in nature; issues such as how to double the growth of a business, transform a culture, offer a world-beating consumer experience, comply with new legislation, or stem an epidemic.
The reason why it’s sometimes referred to as ‘forced ranking’ is because managers have to do just that - forcibly rank all of their team into one of the stated categories regardless of whether they are all performing well or not, which surprisingly can be beneficial in some instances but damaging in others.
An alert on your laptop reminds you of a video conference in 15 minutes. Your co-worker gestures he or she needs to talk to you just for one small minute. An email with a big red exclamation point flashes on the screen.
But I would like to offer my observation that many people fall in love with their jobs because of something else . . .
