It’s easy to understand why. Looking into a candidate’s social activity is a free and easy way to get a better idea of the person’s online reputation. It seems like social media would provide a more detailed picture of the real person behind the polished resume and interview answers.

You might find a future employee you didn't even realize you were looking for and it also allows you to prepare for future growth.
All resumes should be saved onto a database, but if you are receiving thousands of applications, consider tightening up the screening process ( i.e. longer applications that require more thought, to weed out the less suitable applicants).
