Being a leader could be seen from the outside as a glamorous position, but those who have actually been in a leadership position know that it’s a lot less about glamour and a lot more about hard work. You have responsibilities and expectations that come with your role as a leader in your company. Leaders often juggle multiple major projects, while trying to successfully look ahead to changes and opportunities in your industry that will help you stay competitive for years to come. While all of this is important and part of keeping your company headed in the right direction, there are several things you should be keeping on your radar.

Technology has catalyzed an irreversible shift in how the world connects and communicates. As a result, today’s businesses are forced to rethink recruitment and sourcing with a social and mobile mindset, requiring them to both engage potential candidates and stand out from an endless virtual sea of competitors. This rapid, easy access to information has caused a shift in the expectations and behavior of job-seekers as well. Just like retail consumers, today’s candidates want a relationship with potential organizations ahead of time. They want to feel and be part of the brand prior to considering employment. They want to hear from others and know about their experiences. Thus, today more than ever, the importance of strong employment branding and consistent messaging of employment value proposition—spanning all media platforms—is vital. This is particularly important when trying to reach the allusive passive candidate.

To be a world leader, organizations must have great talent. At least that is what we are all taught. People are our #1 asset. If that is true, why aren’t more employers better at attracting, and for that matter, retaining great talent? An important part of the answer is “it’s not their core competency”. They are in the business of delivering service or manufacturing widgets, but not talent acquisition.

While watching the fall-out from the faux sign-language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, I was reminded of the adage, “Learn from your mistakes”. And there’s certainly a lot to learn from this debacle where whoever was tasked with selecting the “interpreter” obviously failed to conduct a background check or even confirm basic professional credentials. As it turns out, the “interpreter” doesn’t know sign language and, to top it off, has a dangerous criminal record.

In today’s competitive and highly complex corporate environment, having the best talent on your side is one of the topmost goals for any CEO. According to a 2012 global survey lead by The Economist Intelligence Unit, 53% of CEOs and CFOs believe that a lack of talented personnel will have a negative impact on their financial gains. It is even more of an issue for companies with more than 1,500 employees, where 67% of company leaders have voiced this concern. Having the right people in key jobs can mean the difference between a company that has a great ROI and stays ahead of its competitors versus a company that is barely hanging on to its place in the market.

It’s perhaps the worst kept secret in the business world that what you know is worth only about 25% as a predictor of whether or not you will succeed. The rest is based on fit - how you fit with your boss, your team, your customers and your organization’s culture.

pplicant tracking systems (ATS) have become an essential aspect of the hiring processes, automating a major portion of the recruiting lifecycle and bringing about greater process efficiencies. Integrating a background check solution into your ATS is a logical next step that has shown to shave up to 75 percent off of customers’ report turnaround times. With some planning, the two systems can – and should – be made to work together, which will result in an ideal state for managing the applicant lifecycle.

When discussing interviewing, one topic that never fails to surface is the challenge of interviewing and hiring millennials—inevitably, there are some individuals who believe 20-somethings are indolent, feel wrongly entitled, and lack basic etiquette in the workplace. They enjoy citing example after example of young adults that can’t stop texting at work, are just in it for the paycheck and expect costly benefits packages and vacation days too soon. This isn’t true with every 20-something, and the problem may lie within the hiring process rather than something that is classified as a “generational issue.”
