    Artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced as an alternative to human intelligence, impacting billions of lives by solving problems and understanding tasks.

    Companies are increasingly using AI tools like chatbots and facial recognition software, especially in recruitment.
     


    However, like any new technology, AI has its own set of challenges and raises a few concerns. AI raises significant concerns about privacy, data protection, and discrimination.

    For AI to be effective, it must incorporate ethical considerations. The biggest ethical challenge in AI recruitment is ensuring it doesn’t perpetuate biases.

    Someone rightly said that AI is only as unbiased as the data it’s fed, and historical hiring data can be skewed. That is, bias in AI arises from algorithms based on skewed data inputs, which can be influenced by the programmer's unconscious biases.

    A recent study by UNESCO highlights worrying tendencies in Large Language models (LLM) to produce gender bias, as well as homophobia and racial stereotyping. It highlights that women represent only 22% of AI professionals, leading to gender biases embedded in AI technologies.

    The default "female" personas of virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Cortana further exemplify how AI can perpetuate gender bias in society.

    All said, AI brings a lot of benefits for companies by enhancing HR processes, especially hiring and recruiting.

    This month, we explore the advantages of AI, the key considerations for organizations when adopting AI technologies, and the ethical issues that may arise. We also discuss strategies for addressing these concerns and ways employers can safeguard employees from biases, discrimination, and data breaches.
