Sometimes people don't want a bonus or pay hike. Instead, what they'd really appreciate is a genuine "thank you.” Good job. Well done. Fantastic. Well, we all certainly recognize the power of positive reinforcement. Feeling appreciated makes employees happy. Compensation and titles are good rewards, but so is the affirmation that they’re important to the company.

Painter, and it seems unheralded productivity guru, Paul Gauguin said, “Stressing output is the key to improving productivity while looking to increase activity can result in just the opposite.” Doesn’t this read exactly like a note to the top managers and HR heads of today’s knowledge organizations?

When I served in the US Army, I took away one very important concept that continues to hold precedence throughout my career. However, for companies that continue to focus on their benefits strategy as an important tool for talent acquisition and retention, the cloud software deployment model may be far more important than they realize. Cloud-based software, by its very nature, enables the flexibility, scalability, customization, and out-of-the-box third-party integrations required in the dynamic benefits engagement and communications landscape.

While we know that good things happen when employees feel appreciated, communicating appreciation to staff is not a miracle salve that cures all wounds.
Sometimes, well-meaning supervisors (and sometimes lazy managers who don’t want to do the hard work of dealing with problems) try to use appreciation as a “quick fix” for deeper issues that need to be addressed.

It is fair to say that one of the biggest issues CEOs and employers are facing today is finding and keeping talented employees. Ask any CEO, small business owner, or C-Suite professional what their biggest challenge is and more often than not they will tell you that attracting and developing talent tops the list.
