Millennials now make up the largest segment of the workforce. While many companies make policies to recruit and cater to the younger generation, it is important that Gen X and Baby Boomer employees also feel acknowledged and valued. Here’s a familiar scenario: Have you ever been in a meeting, seen a colleague do something incredible and think, “I must remember to recognize them for that?” Then, for whatever reason, you ran out of time or became distracted so you resorted to getting them a gift card or something similar thinking it would do the recognition trick. Well, there’s two problems to consider. The more time that passes, the more likely it is that colleague wouldn’t be recognized, causing the moment to be lost entirely. Similarly, even if you gave them a gift card in a corporate setting, it still poses a risk because you would have to remember to report this for payroll and tax purposes.

Gaining a competitive edge is critical for all businesses, particularly when pressured to establish a market presence and boost bottom lines. In the past, organizations have put significant weight on external resources when it comes to facilitating success, either by expansion or product rollouts. However, over the past decade, researchers have determined that a key component to profitability is often more closely related to leadership practices than external growth factors—most notably, employee engagement.
