A Study by Dale Carnegie on Employee Engagement found that about 70% of employees who lack confidence in the abilities of senior leadership are not fully engaged. The same study also found that 80% of employees dissatisfied with their direct manager are disengaged. Organizations do understand the importance of employee engagement because the engaged employees are likely to have above-average productivity.

As Chief Human Capital Officers (CHCOs) embrace high-impact initiatives to help their organizations meet their business and HR needs for the 21st century, employee engagement continues to appear at or near the top of their lists for short-term fixes. Given emerging technology that is replacing the outdated legacy software of the past decade, engagement is rightfully recognized as an area of high need and accompanying strong ability to correct.

As HR and business leaders, you know the importance of employee engagement, recognition, education, and communication. However, today you have a group of employees who are rarely recognized as a distinct group and desperately need to be engaged, educated, supported, and understood. This group represents over six million working Canadians — 35 per cent of your workforce. They are everywhere: Family caregivers. Just ordinary people like clerks, managers, front line staff and executives who have taken on the extraordinary role of taking care of someone in need — an aging parent or someone with long-term health needs.

Employees in North America are giving their employers an estimated $10.7 billion in free money. That’s right – giving away their money for no return on investment.
This was discovered when research undertaken by Ruigrok | Netpanel and commissioned by global software firm Unit4, studied employees in nine countries to determine the average unclaimed expense by country. With $15.5 billion estimated for the US, Canada, UK, Spain, Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium, the majority of unclaimed expenses is a whopping 40% for North America, totaling $10.7 billion annually.

American business is losing its war on engagement.
As a quick reminder on why we took up arms in the first place, it was June 2013 when Gallup first released its State of The American Workplace study that revealed only 30 percent of the nation's workers were fully engaged in their jobs.

You know who we’re talking about. Employees who aren’t afraid to trumpet their own accomplishments, but who seem to be oblivious to the contributions others make. In general, these are the employees who don’t have a clue about how others perceive them.

This time of year, it’s natural to become reflective; to reflect on the last year and on resolutions you have for the New Year.
One of my central messages in my keynote presentations is to encourage more reflection on job engagement. Roughly, 60% of the worldwide workforce is not engaged or disengaged in their job, otherwise known as the middle category of ambivalence.
