A dear friend of mine who owns a small private business once told me that he never compliments his employees. On contrary, he always tells them they could have done a better job. With that, according to him, the next time they will try to do better and improve their performance. That way they will grow and become better… I just sat there thinking to myself “oh, my God! He is going to kill their potential.”

Today’s marketplace is competitive. New products, new advertising tactics, new customer needs, new everything. To equip employees with the right knowledge, behaviors, and skills to keep them ahead of the curve on industry trends, workplace practices, customer demands and more, businesses must invest in developing their people. Your ideal employee benefit program is likely structured to reduce stress, protect and improve emotional and physical health, elevate morale and even promote collaboration among teams. You would like the program to be part of attracting and retaining talent and to differentiate you from competitors. It’s time for you to let the dogs out.

Every employee has different needs. Some are more productive in the mornings while others like to tackle big challenges in the afternoon. There are working parents who need to pick up their kids in the afternoon, and workers who enjoy a run in between meetings. Some workers need a quiet atmosphere and others thrive in busy, chaotic environments. Organizations should look closely at what their employees need to be successful and strive to support those needs whenever possible.

Feel your pulse. You know those frequent, short bursts that beat consistently? That’s what you should try to emulate when you give employee feedback. Think about it: If your heart only beat occasionally, your body would shut down. That’s similar to what can happen on a project or a team when feedback is not given at regular intervals.

Creating an amazing work culture that clearly shows who you are as a company all starts with leadership. When leaders create a work culture that matches what they envision, it starts to become part of the company DNA. Most companies are working towards creating an engaged work environment to stand out and improve their culture, which helps attract candidates and retain their current employees. By 2020, Millennials will form 50% of the global workforce.

As the labor market continues to tighten and employees have more opportunities to explore new job prospects, the issues of employee satisfaction and engagement become more salient for employers interested in retaining qualified employees. Recent research reports from both Gallup and SHRM offer invaluable insight into how job satisfaction and engagement are trending. Gallup (2016) shows that only 34.1% of employees reported being engaged. While this statistic represents a 5-year high, it still means that roughly two thirds of all employees are either not engaged or are actively disengaged from their jobs.

There are myriad positive outcomes that come with building a world-class culture of employee engagement, not the least of which are higher productivity, more ethical behavior, less turnover, and greater profitability. However, I have a favorite outcome, which exists within the healthcare industry: Better safety compliance.
