    Leadership Re-imagined

    Are you a value Dreamer? Driver? Stealer? Killer?

    We often connect leadership with people and business value to the outcome. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easier mechanism to map people directly to business value? Simplified leadership frameworks that align people directly with the business value segments can reduce complexity in our leadership ecosystem.

     

    With that context, let’s re-imagine leadership in terms of value segments. If we organize people’s persona with a value lens, you will find 4 segments of people in any organization or community.

    1. Value Dreamers: They are the visionaries, futurists, and strategists in your organization. They dream big and expect others to dream along with them or support their dreams. Dreamers always search for initiatives and ideas that can generate more value. Dreamers love complex macro challenges that present them opportunities to generate broader value and impact. Dreamers bring transformational thoughts and disruptive ideas to the table. Dreamers carry high visibility among the leadership circles.

    2. Value Drivers
    : Their focus is on delivering and sustaining solutions that touch the end users, customers. Drivers excel in breaking down the macro ideas, strategies from the dreamers to smaller chunks to deliver incremental and continuous value. Happy customers, appreciation from leadership and realized business value keep them motivated. Drivers help dreamers to realize their dream. This segment carries high trust in organizations.

    3. Value Stealers
    : They are opportunistic. They associate themselves closely with dreamers and drivers and look for opportunities to extract value. They will show up on victory lap from nowhere and when things go wrong you just won’t find them around. This segment carries low integrity and trust in organizations and communities.

    4. Value Killers
    : They spread negativity and confusion. They are a constant distraction to dreamers and drivers. They are the virus in organizations and communities. There are two types of value killers. The first type operates visibly and their behavior is more or less their organic character style. Often they are unaware of the outcome and impact of their actions. The second category operates in disguise. They usually have a hidden agenda, solid plans, and clear targets. It is tough to spot them since they act as a dreamer when they talk to a dreamer and act as a driver when they interact with a driver.

    While each individual has a primary value segment they belong to, often they carry some combination of all four segments. If we understand the above framework, that simplifies our approach as leaders, professionals and community members.

    As a professional/individual please ask yourself
    • Am I a value Dreamer? Driver? Stealer? Killer?
    • How can I elevate the dreamer and driver behaviors and eliminate the stealer and killer attributes in me?
    As a leader, please ask yourself
    • Am I recognizing and supporting the dreamers and drivers around me?
    • Am I connecting dreamers with drivers so that they can partner and elevate the value offering?
    • Am I identifying and coaching the value stealers to shift to dreamers and drivers?
    • Am I spotting and eliminating the value killers so that my dreamers and drivers can operate more efficiently?
