How many of us are ready to break away from the familiar and embark on a new adventure? Most of us would love to do that. However, circumstances might play a villain sometimes. Nevertheless, if you are looking for some inspiration, you are at the right place.

I left my old life. I left the tightly defined identity that I had been clinging to for years. I swung my leg over Voodoo—my beautiful BMW S1000RR superbike—and I rode. I wasn’t sure what I was riding away from, or what I was riding towards, but I knew I had to do it. By day fifty-six of my journey, my old identity was firmly in the rear-view mirror. But I still wasn’t sure who I was becoming.
As an Organizational Psychologist and 28 years working with the top three levels in Fortune 100 companies, I’ve noticed some common themes with some of the most successful people in the world. See if you can identify with any of these:
How many times have you driven a familiar route — say from home to work and back again — with little effort or awareness, almost like you had an in-cabin autopilot behind the wheel? We have similar autopilot behaviors for things like brushing our teeth, taking a shower, getting dressed and — believe it or not — even the way we think and feel in certain situations. These automated neuro-patterns subconsciously kick into play each and every day of our lives, and that’s all well and good… as long as they’re helping us and taking us where we want to go.
A person’s success typically isn’t the result of superhuman feats. It’s the outcome of doing the things anyone can do -- though most of us just don’t. As a point in fact, 92 percent of people who set New Year’s goals don’t achieve them.
Let's face it, relationships can be a source of a lot of stress especially when we do not have ground rules in place. Just as the yellow flag in football is used to indicate illegal conduct, so too we need an infrastructure (a process and structure) to minimize below the line behavior (stone walling, ugly talk and defensive behavior) and maximize healthy, authentic connection as we create a safe space for effective conversation.
We often connect leadership with people and business value to the outcome. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easier mechanism to map people directly to business value? Simplified leadership frameworks that align people directly to the business value segments can reduce complexity in our leadership ecosystem.
I’d bet you also are behind in reading all of the blogs, articles and books that you feel you should. You probably feel overwhelmed and discouraged. Or just worn out. Welcome to the Busyness Club. I feel that way too. Your team members do. And so do your clients.
