    Sperry Gyroscope had been founded in 1910 by Elmer Sperry, one of the most brilliant and prolific inventors of the early 20th century. Sperry himself held nearly 400 patents – about twice as many as Thomas Edison – including the gyro-compass, which dramatically improved the navigation and stability of ships.
