When you hear the word habit, you likely think of bad habits such as smoking or over-eating, but good habits will lead you to happiness. Most people just want to be happy. Mothers most want their children to be happy. Yet I never remember talking with my parents on how to be happy—it was just what they wanted for me.

Maybe you have a broken leg at work. I don’t mean the physical kind—the type where you see a doctor and stay off of it for a while. That kind will heal in a few weeks by itself. I mean the broken relationship kind—the type that’s much harder to heal, keeps you awake at night, and can make you unproductive for years if it isn’t fixed.

We run at a fast pace and aim to accomplish too much with our limited time each day. Often the speed with which we work and the responsibility we possess become a challenge. One consequence is a low battery charge that results in low self-awareness.

No one aspires to mediocrity. You won’t see a poster on an office wall—unless it’s there ironically—encouraging people to shoot for the middle of the pack. We all aspire to create something valuable, to make a contribution, and to operate in our sweet spot. However, sheer determination to do great work is insufficient. It’s easy to muster up the willpower to attack your objectives, but that doesn’t mean that your objectives are correct or that you are making meaningful progress on the work that matters to you.
