What’s in a credit report? Credit reports are not routinely used in pre-employment screening. In fact, our most recent survey revealed that only 12% of employers use them regularly. However, employment credit reports1 can be valuable to employers because they can offer insight into an applicant’s reliability and offer clues about a person’s sense of personal responsibility. An employment credit report might include derogatory credit information, public record filings (bankruptcies, liens and judgments), account standing with creditors, and other clues like previous address history.

The NFL is in its offseason, but employers should still pay some attention to what is happening in the world of professional football and in particular, at the Miami Dolphins. In the fall and winter of last year, the Dolphins received extra attention not because of their performance, but because second-year offensive lineman Jonathan Martin left the team, apparently after having been bullied by Richie Incognito, a veteran teammate and fellow offensive linesman.

Whenever I see “diversity” in a New York Times article headline, I perk up. But, when the word “dishonesty” is also in the tile, I am intrigued. In Sunday’s paper, one of my favorite columnists, Ross Douthat created a dissonance for me. Somehow, he managed to opine on three really big news items that dealt with vastly different aspects of diversity and rolled them all into one article: the anti-marriage equality CEO resigning from Mozilla; Brandeis withdrawing its invitation to Hirsi to be a graduation speaker; and Sandra Korn’s proposal to ending research at Harvard that furthers sex, race, and other forms of oppression.

The hiring process employees must go through is very important. New hires are given all the important information such as possible pension plans, health insurance, and direct deposit for their paychecks. Employees pay particular attention to these documents because their number one concern is getting paid, and what types of benefits they will be receiving from the employer. This initial paperwork can become overwhelming and many aspects can be overlooked. A very important piece of information that may be taken less seriously than needed is the harassment and discrimination policy that employees must read and sign.

Over the years as an ethics expert and speaker, I have tried to find an analogy that would help my clients understand the importance of discernment before making those tough decisions. It was while watching some kids throws rocks in a pond that I finally came to a realization. Decision making is like throwing a rock in a pond. No matter how big or small the rock is water is displaced. Likewise, no matter how “big” or “small” the decision is, people are affected.

Employers sponsoring group health plans (GHPs) should be familiar with ERISA. Seems easy, but many either do not understand what defines an ERISA GHP or the requirements, resulting in a rise in ERISA audits and lawsuits.
