As we celebrate Women’s History Month in March, with International Women’s Day (IWD) falling on March 8, let’s check out the progress on gender equality. Although the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted all areas of life and work, the impact it had on women was very evident. From gender-based violence to unpaid care responsibilities, domestic burden, and loss of job, it has not been a smooth ride for women around the world. What does gender equality look like today?
The March issue of Leadership Excellence includes expert articles by women leaders, from different walks of life, that talk about going beyond gender equality, breaking the bias at work, and how women leaders mastered skills in the past two years to ace whatever tests they were facing.
Can going beyond gender equality create a sustainable tomorrow? Simone Milasas’ article, A World Of Equality For Women? Or A World Of Choice? insists that if we keep focusing on the separation of men and women, we might not get to the sustainable tomorrow that is available. It is important to stop wishing for things to change and start creating them.
When it is time to celebrate IWD in 2022 with themes of ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’ and ‘break the bias,’ we need to get courageous about the colloquy and go deeper than surface-level celebrations and conversations, as explained by Yemi Penn in her article, Beyond Surface Level Celebrations.
Women have dealt with gender-based inequities in the workplace for decades. In 2021, close to half a million Canadian women left the workforce and are yet to return. Why aren’t men speaking up? Jeff Harris' article, The World Needs More Women In Leadership, highlights how men in leadership positions can ensure they tailor their benefits in a way that best serves the entire workforce.
Aligning with the International Women's Day 2022 campaign theme, #BreakTheBias, HR.com reached out to women leaders to hear their stories on breaking the bias and thoughts on what needs to be done to combat bias and promote gender equality in the workplace. Check out the segment, Let’s #BreakTheBias In The Workplace, for valuable insights.
Also included are exclusive interviews with 5 women leaders, who each discuss their career journey, challenges they faced, and what kept them going.
In brief, this month’s issue is all about women in leadership, the progress women have made, the struggle ahead, and closing the gender gap.
