Developing Effective Managers
Our editorial team interviewed Shanan Arnold and Raydiance Dangerfield from Universal Service Administrative Company at the LEAD2018 Awards this past February. Here are some excerpts from the exclusive interview.
What is the overall objective of your program?
The program was designed to introduce first time managers to foundational topics as they relate to being an effective manager.
Who do you impact with your program?
Our target population for this program is any employee who is promoted from an individual contributor to a first time people manager at USAC.
What are the lessons you’ve learned this year from facilitating your program?
I learned several lessons facilitating the program this year, but the most impactful has been to commit to evaluate application back on the job post training. This is always a challenging task, but by committing to it, we were able to support the first time managers with a plan for success when they returned to their day to day responsibilities.
How do you measure the return on investment and success of the program?
We began with the end in mind by identifying what we wanted to evaluate and what outcomes we wanted to achieve, then weaved those into the course objectives. Throughout the year with gathered feedback using level 1 - level 3 evaluations and by doing so, we were able to keep a pulse on the outcomes achieved as well as make timely revisions. By focusing on quality and feedback upfront, we were able to make bigger investments in leadership development programs for 2018.
What lies ahead for the program and how will it continue to succeed?
The success of the program has allowed our team to expand this program and bring two more leadership development programs to the company this year. We will continue to work with the business to closely customize all training offerings to ensure development opportunities are meeting the needs of our leaders at USAC
