Our editorial team interviewed Philip Altschuler from Gables Residential at the LEAD2018 Awards this past February. Here are some excerpts from the exclusive interview.
About the programs
LEADER and Gables Leadership Institute are leadership development programs that focus on building leadership competencies through a combination of classroom and experiential training paired with challenging creative problem solving projects.
What are the overall objectives of your programs?
Both programs feature content, exercises, and projects that build soft skills including creative problem solving, self-awareness, communication, team skill development, and strategy.
Who do you impact with your programs?
The Leader program targets high-potential mid-level managers and builds their leadership skill set so they are better prepared to manage people instead of processes as they move into community leadership positions.
Gable Leadership Institute targets VP and Director level high potential leaders and focuses on developing skills including systems thinking, resilience, and creative problem solving. As each participant receives Leadership Coaching, we find this program is effective at building a talent succession pipeline.
What are the lessons you’ve learned this year from facilitating your programs?
Based on a combination of observations and feedback from participants we learned that participants could benefit from a presentation skills class and by moving the class on Visionary Leadership & Strategy to earlier in the curriculum; participants can further stretch as they work to solve assigned business challenges.
How do you measure the return on investment and success of the programs?
We measure ROI through a combination of factors including participant and leader feedback, Leadership Coach feedback, associate preparedness for advancement, promotions, and other participant growth (taking on new responsibilities) in the organization.
What lies ahead for the programs and how will it continue to succeed?
Both programs are being expanded to offer ongoing learning opportunities to current and past participants. This includes additional exclusive leadership seminars and webinars designed to reinforce our culture of learning and growing
