Leadership and management are sometimes used to describe the same behaviours but the origins of the words show they are different. The word “management” comes from the Latin word for hand (as does manipulation) and it is about handling things, whereas the origins of the word “leadership” are more uncertain.

There is a strong consensus that leaders are role models and coaches. Peter Drucker instilled this short phrase in me, “Your mission should fit on a t-shirt,” as he did with so many others, and it has guided my career for many decades. It has helped me focus and become pretty good at what I do, which I can describe in two words: behavioural coaching.

We have likely all been renters at some point in our lives. The apartment where we lived belonged to the landlord. Usually, its care and maintenance were not high on our list of priorities. If something went wrong, was damaged, torn, or chipped, it was the landlord’s problem—not ours.

IBM is estimating that with the build out of the “internet of things,” knowledge will double every 12 hours.
