While AI continues to evolve, it holds several opportunities to optimize the workforce, enhance organizational culture, and stay competitive during this transformative journey. Here are eight ways leaders can keep pace as AI continues to change business.
1. Demystify AI
Some employees may not understand exactly what AI is or its capabilities. That, in turn, can lead to fear over how it could impact their role and work. To create buy-in, especially among staff without deep technical skills, communicate openly with employees about your organization’s plans for using AI, such as what job functions or tasks it may augment. You may also want to bring in AI experts or demo some AI tools you employ or plan to use to show how they can enhance current work. The good news? Many organizations have already implemented transparency about their AI processes and provide AI training to their employees.2. Prepare People for Change
For many, the impact of AI on jobs is a top concern. Whether they’re worried about job displacement or simply want to know how to effectively utilize AI in their role, offer training opportunities to help employees develop the necessary capabilities to adapt and succeed. This will not only minimize disruptions as you employ the technology, but may also help maintain morale. Be sure the training is focused on individual learning needs, concerns, and aspirations for the greatest impact.3. Counsel and Coach
In addition to formal training, consider providing coaching for employees to help them understand how AI can enhance their skills instead of simply replacing them. This type of one-on-one communication will enable staff to see that AI is intended to make their job better, improve their work, and enhance productivity, reducing their anxiety and building their confidence in the process. You can also use these sessions to help employees understand how to leverage the full potential of AI in their role.4. Focus on Soft Skills
While AI may change the qualities companies look for in employees, there are certain soft skills that it can’t replicate – and that will be in increasingly high demand. As an organization expands its use of AI, human qualities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and conflict resolution become even more important. Be sure to offer training opportunities – for leaders and employees alike – that can develop these skills.5. Reinforce Values
As AI continues to revolutionize businesses by enhancing efficiencies and workplace performance, it also changes organizational dynamics. Amid the disruption, it’s important for leaders to maintain clarity of mission and vision, especially for employees who seek a connection between their role and progress toward the company’s objectives to drive them. Be sure to share the company’s strategy for AI and how initiatives will reflect the company’s mission, values, and goals.6. Don’t Forget the Human Element
With its ability to analyze large amounts of data and identify patterns, AI can provide leaders with valuable insights to help them make more informed decisions that lead to better outcomes. As the reliance on AI grows, however, it's important to continue to consider factors a machine may not yet be able to detect, especially when making decisions that impact the employee experience. To do that, be sure leaders nurture and emphasize human relationships to gain that emotional intelligence.7. Make Motivating Teams a Priority
AI can’t replace leading with meaning and purpose. With inspirational leadership being more important than ever, offer training to help leaders navigate new challenges arising from AI. In addition to keeping up with technological advances, these opportunities can help leaders address employees’ needs and motivations amid the uncertainties of AI, such as helping them embrace change and view AI as an opportunity to be better positioned for success.8. Foster Open Communication
Offer opportunities for employees, especially those who may have concerns about job loss, skill obsolescence, or a lack of control when it comes to incorporating AI in the workplace, to safely express their feelings as they adapt to changes. It’s also a good idea to provide training on active listening to managers so they can respond to employee fears and uncertainty with empathy. Encourage management to regularly check in on their needs and well-being and offer support as necessary.Author Bio
