"I believe everyone should practice some sort of mindfulness meditation, whatever works for him/her. Especially now, when all over the world, people are in either lock down or under many other kinds of personal restrictions that they are not used to. Self-care should be regarded as a must for everyone," says Chen Raizman, CEO, The ActiveSeat Co.
In an interview with HR.com, Chen talks about how to practice mindfulness and it can help the overall well-being of your employees, and much more. Excerpts from the interview:
Q: How important is it to practice mindfulness, especially during the pandemic, to ensure self-care?
Chen Raizman: Mindfulness can reduce stress, increase focus, regulate emotions, and do more. It gives all the benefits any person should want, and it is very easy to practice in almost every-day situation.

Q: Have you taken any new measures to encourage employees to practice mindfulness now?
Chen Raizman: We always encourage our employees, freelancers and even suppliers to be engaged in self-care activities. Many people don’t understand how helpful it will be for them. We give all our employees extra time to engage in an activity of their choice that will help promote their well-being.
Q: Do you think leaders need to practice mindfulness now more than ever?
Chen Raizman: I think that there are many kinds of leaders, not every activity fits everyone. I do think that any leader should have a system in place that helps them focus their attention and to observe their thoughts and feelings without judgment. As leaders are required to make decisions that affect countless people, mindfulness meditation can help achieve great results. At these uncertain times, being more focused and being able to make good decisions are definitely critical, even more so than in regular times.
Q: What are some best practices to gain the most benefits from mindfulness?
Chen Raizman: There are about 8 main ways to practice mindfulness, not all of them fit everyone. Some people can’t sit and meditate (like myself), some people don’t like physical activity. So, choosing the “best” practices is actually a personal question.
Here are my top 4:
Here are my top 4:
- Create something - If you have a creative hobby, this can also be a good opportunity to practice mindfulness. Spend some time doing what you enjoy and just be in the moment of creation. The creation can also be work related, as long as you enjoy the process and able to focus on that creation alone for the needed period of time.
- Spend time outside - You don’t need to go far, just walk around and observe what you see on your walk, how the weather feels, what you hear, and what you smell.
- Focus on the task at hand - Take one task at a time and put your focus on the task at hand. When you are done, take a short break and then tackle the next task.
- Engage in physical activities you are passionate about - This is easy. It can be anything from a long runs, swimming, or even weight lifting. As long as you can focus on that one thing while doing it, it will give you the needed mindfulness effect.

Q: The Global Mindfulness Meditation Apps market is estimated to be 341.9 million by 2029, according to reports. Have you tried or recommended any apps?
Chen Raizman: I did try some but unfortunately did not connect to it.
Q: Can you share any tips or tricks to maintain employee happiness and encourage employees to practice mindfulness virtually?
Chen Raizman: The best tip is to give people the time needed (and it is not too long) to work on themselves, even at the short expense of work time. The benefits will be great for both sides.
