Just like a frog accustoming slowly into the boiling water and eventually to its ultimate end, we don’t realize anything is wrong until it’s too late. Our body is designed to be active. Long periods of sitting can seriously impact our health and cut short our life. People who do sedentary desk jobs park themselves for almost 8 hours a day! Unfortunately, the most frightening part is, we probably already know that sitting is killing us!

In the United States, 86 percent of Americans sit for eight hours or more each day. Surprised? Unlikely. Employers are well aware of the problem. It’s a big reason why annual biometrics screenings and wellness programs incentivize employees to know their numbers and lose weight. It’s not uncommon for an organization to reward employees for reaching healthy (or at least healthier) BMIs and waist circumferences.

When business leaders promote plans to “increase the bottom line” by cutting travel expenses, I can’t help but cringe. A Time magazine editorial lauded one of their senior writers who died of a massive heart attack at age 44. They described him as a "vivid personality, first-class intellect, bracing professionalism." However, in today’s world, a single system doesn’t seem possible given the different data privacy rules across jurisdictions. The result of these varying rules is that, because of the fears of being out of compliance, a lot of wellness activities just don’t happen. What’s more, rules continue to change as they have recently in places like the European Union and the United Kingdom where there are a number of prevailing factors.

When it comes to open enrollment, employees have a lot of things on their wish list. In fact, many are looking for an online shopping experience similar to Amazon.com. According to Aflac’s 2017 WorkForces Report, 44 percent of employees surveyed said they’d prefer the process of choosing benefits to be more like browsing for options online, like Amazon’s website, which allows for easy product comparisons.1
