March is National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month. As many as 50 million Americans, or 20 percent of the population, must manage one of 80 serious, chronic diseases that cause the body's immune system to turn on itself, according to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA). I’ve written about this previously, and that article sparked a few comments and some questions. It seems not everyone agrees with my understanding that employer paid Medical Services Plan(MSP) premiums are a cash taxable benefit, subject to Employment Insurance(EI)premiums.
The distinction between cash and non-taxable benefits hangs on what the “benefit” received by the employee actually is.

The Communicating Employee Benefits survey of HR professionals ran in the final quarter of 2016 and garnered 1,004 total responses from an array of participants representing all industries. Conducted by HR.com in partnership with BambooHR, the research found that only half of the respondents indicate their companies help employees understand the added value that their benefits contribute to overall compensation.

Let’s face it, productivity, powerhouse culture and team building requires healthy human beings who feel supported and engaged. I know first hand the relationship to productivity and disease when I went through advanced cancer back in 2016. After winning a medal at the World Tae Kwon Do Colorado State Championship a few years earlier, I found myself in fetal position barely able to lift my head.
