Just recently, there were 2.3M additional applications for unemployment, which is the 16th week in a row that claims have exceeded 1 million. When newly unemployed individuals look for alternative health insurance options - they are faced with options that can cost more than $1,000-2,000 a month which for most people is out of the question. There isn’t enough awareness around affordable options, even though marketplaces can help people pay less than $25 a month for coverage.

Recently, I wrote a letter to Congress pushing for a one-time special enrollment period to help those who never filed, or don’t fit the qualifying events, get coverage as the next wave of COVID-19 sweeps the nation. The letter was signed by CEOs of companies like Postmates, TaskRabbit, InstaCart, DoorDash, as well as Andy Slavitt, acting admin of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under Barack Obama; and Ezekiel Emanuel, a health-care adviser to Obama, and hopes to install a window for people to sign up for affordable health insurance before the next open enrollment.
