This article presents estimates of frontline worker demand in key occupations, offering alternative projections to illustrate the possible range of workers needed. It also notes the factors that could shift demand for workers in one direction or another. It does not offer original projections or analysis of workforce demand, which are beyond the scope of this paper. Even as technologies such as telemedicine and robotic surgery evolve, caregiving remains a labor intensive, face-to-face activity, especially for an aging population.

The term “work-life balance” is a popular buzzword within many corporate circles, but it was not too long ago that the term didn’t exist. For example, when an architectural engineer in the 1970s left work, he or she was unable to bring the drafting table back home; employees were effectively unplugged at night. However today, technology has enabled that same engineer to use Autodesk on his/her laptop. Gone are the days of office memos; we now reply instantly to email at any hour.

Fitness trackers are the latest craze in wearable technology. I jumped on the fitness tracker bandwagon in August by purchasing a Fitbit® Flex™. I was curious… would this really impact my day-to-day life? Would this be the gentle nudge I needed to incorporate more activity in my day? Or, like with most fads, would the initial excitement fade all too quickly?
Two months in, and I’m still very aware of my progress-to-goal each day. Even disappointed when I don’t make it. The sleep tracker also reminds me I have two young children wreaking havoc on my sleep pattern. I haven’t even started to monitor my water or caloric intake.
Somehow, this little fitness tracker has become a fierce and fashionable reminder not to give up.
Potential stares me in the face each day in the form of this small, pink bracelet.

Your contractor wouldn’t remodel your house without consulting you. Your hairdresser wouldn’t cut without asking what style you want. Your doctor wouldn’t treat you without discussing your symptoms. So, why would you build your wellness program without feedback from your employees?

Learn how to pay attention.
Being mindful is an obvious concept, but it amazes me how little it’s practiced.
I’m always so insulted when someone is using their cell phone while talking to me, or checking an email in the middle of a conversation. It’s plain rude.

We all know the physical and physiological benefits of regular exercise - reducing risk of disease, creating a lean, fit and toned body, improving quality of sleep, greater energy, vitality and so much more. However, working with hundreds of clients for twenty years, I’ve seen time and time again another incredible yet often overlooked benefit from regular and consistent exercise… the link between a strong body and a strong mind.

Bang! The starting gun has sounded, and leaders throughout the country are off to attract and retain coveted talent. The front-runners know that employees generally thrive and productivity multiplies with great culture. Those same leaders, the corporate culture megastars, often enhance that employee experience with unique and sometimes competitive benefits. On the 2014 Fortune 100 Best Companies list, many of these benefits are shared, for example – Intuit gives each employee up to $650 in fitness incentives – not bad, beats paying for the gym membership. Salesforce.com awards top sellers with a two-week trip to Bhutan – not exactly sure where Bhutan is on a map, but it’s probably a spiritual journey. And the best, Boston Consulting Group, gave every employee an interactive sculpture inspired by the founder’s favorite quote about Archimedes. Really?

This time of year is special for many of us to celebrate with gift-giving, family visits, parties and festive events that commemorate the spirit of sharing and good will “toward all men”, that is traditionally tied to the first Christmas 2,000 years ago.

For many American workers year-end stress is just the icing on the cake of an already stress-filled year. According to the World Health Organization, stress is estimated to cost American businesses up to $300 billion per year. In fact, a recent Work Stress Survey conducted by Harris Interactive found that more than eight in 10 employed Americans are stressed out about their jobs, citing top concerns of heavier workloads and poor pay.
