One of the great advantages we have, as evolved and mature adults, is the ability to seek collective wisdom. We don’t have to burn our hands on the hot stove if we can solicit advice from someone who has already faced that experience.
As the author of more than 50 books, each of which provides my readers with my contact information, I am constantly contacted by people from all around the world seeking advice. Far too often, while the type of information they’re seeking may be valid, their timing is faulty, and they have already made a bad decision or committed to an inadvisable course of action. It is far better to seek wise counsel or advice before you make a mistake or create a mess than to seek help to get out of a situation that could have been avoided with a bit of quality information before the fact.
Within the last 24 hours, I was contacted by a friend and colleague who had gotten involved in a horrible investment product and was told there was no way to get out of it. With many hours of work utilizing expertise and contacts, we may soon be able to get the person out of this unfortunate position with minimal damage. I can’t help thinking that a two-minute phone call or a quick email before the investment commitment was made could have easily avoided this entire situation.
It's always better to seek advice, counsel, and wisdom surrounding important decisions in your personal or professional life. However, always remember the sooner the advice is implemented, the bigger impact it will have. The passage of time is a wonderful asset when you have made good decisions, but it becomes a liability when you’ve made a bad decision or a terrible mistake. Unlike fine wine, classic art, and prime real estate, poor decisions and mistakes do not age well.
The sooner you can get off the wrong road, change your course, and get on the right track, the easier it will be to overcome your error. Better yet, seek advice and wisdom before you start the journey, and you can be on the right road from the beginning.
As you go through your day today, get good advice and get it early.
