Storing I-9 Forms

When our company was being set up there was not a "Human Resources" person in place and the woman who was here was told that the employee's I-9 forms should not be kept in their personnel file. Is that correct and if so, why?
Thanks for any help...

In answer to your question yes, the law states they must be separated from the personnel file. Part of the decision in this is the data contained on the I-9 should not be viewable by hiring managers. The new law allows you to store them electronically via imaging systems or if you can't go that direction now, keep them in binders away from the personnel file.
