Saftey Clothing / OSHA - summer shorts in manufacturing environment.

Our manufacturing plant employees are requesting we allow shorts in the hot summer months. We manufacture engine accessories so various chemicals might be in use, heavy tools or machinery, etc. Safety concerns vary depending on which area you are in. Can anyone tell me what OSHA, other regulations, etc. may say about this? Does anyone have a policy on this or have any advice to offer?
