Every day my department sends out an email notifying everybody about who’s out and why (personal day, sick day, vacation, business travel, etc.) Is it legal? If I am sick, does everybody need to know?

There are so many issues surrounding privacy that everyone should lean on the cautious side. Clearly when employees are absent that is common knowledge, but divulging the reason why is not and should not be divulged to anyone that is not in a need to know position. Specifically, sending out an email with personal details surrounding the reason an employee is out is unnecessary and risky. If someone is out here I notify the supervisor who and why. The remaining employees are informed but, only that the person is out.

Sending out a list of names is fine. BUT DO NOT SEND OUT THE REASON. You are divulging personal information and are probably violating HIPAA and ADA laws and that will cause you lots of problems.
