Break in and larceny in office

We are a 300 seat call center that had a general manager's office broken into last week.  I am the HR Manager for this location, and our corporate office is pushing me to investigate the theft to a deeper level than I am comfortable.  I've gathered as much information as I could such as key card entry reports, questioning anyone who entered or exited the specific floor the theft occurred on during that time, and had a police report completed as well as had the GM submit a report for the missing petty cash that was stolen.
Approximately $600 total was taken in cash.  Corporate has now asked me to begin to question people further who we feel could have information or be responsible.  I told them that I am not comfortable with putting people in front of me and making them feel as if I am accusing them.  I feel that if they want this completed, someone in legal should do it or they should contact the police to try to escalate.  Where does my role end with something like this?  It's a larceny, not just an HR violation.
