Hi, I have an employee who has Bipolar Disorder I and has provided written notification to HR (via email) regarding their diagnosis. Is this employee considered to be in protected status under ADA (highly compensated employee as well)? Do they need to request accomodations to be protected? What concerns should HR have in this regard? The state in question is IL.

    Thank you,

    D

"Bipolar disorder is one of the many conditions covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This law is designed to protect people with disabilities from discrimination in hiring, job assignments, promotions, pay, firing, benefits, layoffs, and all other employment-related activities."
