While many of us observe dedicated months or days throughout the year—such as Pride Month,International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and International Women’s Day—October brings us Global Diversity Awareness Month, a time that invites us to engage deeply with the multifaceted
dimensions of diversity that shape our world and bind together multiple dimensions of diversity. This month brings with it an opportunity for introspection and celebration. This month encourages us to honour the unique stories that each person carries, recognizing that diversity is not just about acknowledging differences but actively celebrating them. It challenges us to confront our biases and stereotypes and having conversations that break down barriers. In this world that can so often be defined by division whether by geographical boundaries, or religions, or color of skin, or gender or sexual orientation, or what have you , GDAM advocates appreciation of what makes us different and the common threads of humanity that weave them together. The UN theme- leave No one behind, that underlies every one of the 17 SDGs gets represented is we actively advocate for leveraging diversity. What does celebrating GDAM really mean? It raises the question: How do my stories intersect with others? What can we learn from one another? How can respect each other and coexist in harmony irrespective of our differences. How can we use these differences to weave a beautiful tapestry
where everyone thrives? This month is more than just a few days on the calendar; it is the starting point to engage in meaningful conversations about inclusion, understanding, and respect for all, which should manifest in actionable initiatives throughout the year.Started in 1999, it dates back to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly, which holds respect for all persons irrespective of their background.Let’s recognise that Diversity is not a unidimensional concept; it encompasses multiple dimensions that intersect in complex ways. Cultural diversity recognizes the richness of different backgrounds, traditions, and practices. Gender diversity goes beyond the binary framework, acknowledging a spectrum of identities. Racial and ethnic diversity embraces individuals from various backgrounds, while age diversity values contributions from different generations. All of these intersect to create unique individuals, with different thought processes, belief systems, way of doing things, world view, leadership styles, communication styles and what not. Therefore, most importantly, we must consider intersectionality—the idea that overlapping identities shape individual experiences and expectations. Have you ever thought about how your own multiple identities influence your perspective? This holistic understanding fosters deeper connections among individuals and encourages inclusive initiatives, policies and processes that
benefit everyone. This requires a thought through systemic intervention and hence cannot be subject to any one day or month.Global Diversity Awareness Month symbolizes more than just recognition of diverse dimensions of diversity and their intersectionality; it represents a commitment to building stronger communities. It reminds that inclusivity is essential for social cohesion. As we reflect on this month’s significance, we must ask ourselves: Are we inadvertently alienating certain groups by focusing solely on one aspect of diversity? For example, while it’s vital to champion women’s rights, how do we ensure that men feel included in these conversations? The significance of GDAM lies in its potential to inspire us to think critically about our definitions of inclusion and belonging. A truly inclusive society is one where every voice is not only heard but respected and valued. This requires us to go beyond surface-level acknowledgment and engage in
meaningful discussions that encompasses all perspectives. By doing so, we can foster environments where everyone feels empowered to share their experiences and contribute to the collective narrative. A holistic view of diversity would be embracing interfaces rather than compartmentalizing
at points of intersection; it nudges everyone into finding out how race, gender, age, sexual orientation, and many more factors play together in the individual's perception, understanding, and experience. Such nuanced understanding might help tear down the barrier existing to favour the
marginalization of certain groups and to allow for belonging for all.Organizations are a sub-unit of society and play a significant role in diversity and inclusion. The culture and behaviour that is driven in an organisation has ripple effect on the societal mindset. Building an environment wherein the employees feel valued and respected; will not stay restricted to the organisation but will get percolated to our homes and communities. For the whole month of October as we reflect on how our organizations can embrace diversity, let it not be as a one-time effort but an ongoing conversation. What can we do today to create such an environment for everyone? What might this month become if we take it as our opportunity to
engage meaningfully?Organizations can celebrate diversity and inclusion in the workplace through a variety of intentional strategies that foster a culture of belonging and respect. From integration inclusive touch points in every process along the employee life cycle- Recruitment to exit; sensitizing managers and leaders
on different dimensions of diversity, challenges they face and inclusive behaviours like inclusive language, empathy, curiosity, active listening; giving ERGs teeth; building DEI agenda and progress in every communication, universal design for redesigning policies and so much more. When, throughout the month of October and beyond it, we engage with diverse viewpoints, we help bring together an ever-increasing inclusive workplace where all feel valued and able to thrive. In short, Global Diversity Awareness Month is a celebration that inspires action. This makes us question our own practices and policies while reminding us to create spaces that take everyone along. Valuing the unique journey of each person and setting up an environment of mutual respect is sure to make
stronger communities thrive. Let's commit to the creation of a world where each one of us is celebrated for who we are—in our differences lies our greatest strength.
