In my recent conversation with David Foote on the “Big Shift,” we focused on the generational shift happening under our feet. Early into it, I cited a fascinating stat from a recent Foote Partners presentation: “In 2030 75% of the workforce will be Gen Z and Millennial.” It got me thinking about the so-called generational divide and the role AI plays and can play in either narrowing or widening the various fault lines and crevasses at all levels across the organization.
AI has the potential to connect people who would otherwise never interact, providing a mechanism for the exchange of experiences, perspectives, skills, and institutional knowledge spanning the generations, becoming a renewable source of energy and innovation. But, there are some areas where it might increase friction and create conflict. (FYI, I used the term “Generation AIX” in the title to suggest that AI can be a great equalizer and “leveler,” equipping everyone with powerful tools to gain greater visibility and reach across the organization and overcoming real or imagined generational barriers to facilitate peer-to-peer learning, spur professional/personal growth, and strengthen company culture.)
