#9 - A warning from the HR Tech Lorax

I can't even remember how I stumbled across this - probably a late-night doom scroll on Reddit. This article was written way back in 2019 when Boeing first started to have their quality issues. In an effort to minimize costs and boost automation, they outsourced junior engineering work that may have helped them hit deadlines in the short term, but over time became larger issues of sacrificed quality and trust. The bottom line from author Eric Elliott is this:

Regardless of which systems these engineers worked on, if you foster an engineering culture where developers are made to feel that management values fast and cheap over continuous progress and quality software, that will have a tremendously negative impact on both the quality and the timely delivery of your software. Buggy software takes longer to build.

It's only been five years, but think about how much damage Boeing has suffered since then. As of Thursday, 8/29, its stock is down over 50% since 2019.

I realize that I may be the HR Tech Lorax, warning my readers about the dangers of speeding into AI adoption at the expense of customer service. Still, I feel like we are just making the same mistakes by repeating bad decisions and expecting different results.
    • You can outsource your customer service to a ticketed system in India, but don't be surprised if your customers are so frustrated with the wait times and feeling like they are not a priority that they rage quit your software.
    • You can have GenAI write everything for you, but don't be surprised when you lose engagement because your brand just becomes background noise in all the other software companies doing the same.
    • You can chip away at the human interactions in hiring, but don't be surprised that your customers/candidates/target audience feels more lost and frustrated.

If you are in HR Tech management, you need to find a balance. Reduce friction in your processes without adding delay and worry to the end user.

Before I get to this week's Wrap, I want to take a moment and plug my services while I look for my next full-time role after a mass layoff. If your organization needs marketing, writing, public relations, analyst relations, product strategy, a shoulder to cry on, or whatever - let's talk. I love the HR Tech space and would love to help any company make its mark.
In the meantime, I will be at RecFest in Nashville thanks to Ben Eubanks and Lighthouse Research & Advisory covering the event and meeting as many people as possible. I'd also love to get to HR Tech if anyone needs help with competitive intelligence or analyst relations. Shoot me a message if you can help make it happen. Stay tuned for my return to podcasting as well.

On to the Wrap. This week's Wrap features the announcement of winners of the top HR Tech products in 2024, Lattice prepping to launch an HRIS, O.C. Tanner partnering with CipherHealth to bring recognition to healthcare, Paycor promoting Tiffany Sieve to CMO, a baseball all-star dropping into a neighborhood kids game, and a deep dive into The Lorax. Enjoy and have a great holiday weekend!

Lattice is set to launch their HRIS for general availability at their annual conference Lattiverse October 8th. From the release:

Lattice will offer an HRIS alongside a world-class talent management system, with performance insights and employee data all in one place – allowing companies to streamline operations while connecting the dots between employee performance, engagement, compensation, and career development.

O.C. Tanner Partners with CipherHealth to Enhance Recognition for Healthcare Systems

CipherHealth has software that helps doctors digitize the experience of making their rounds. With an iPad or other smart tablet, they can capture patient information preferences, and notes on their care. Additionally, patients can follow up with the doctor and their team of nurses for any questions they have about their care. For example, a patient can submit questions through their mobile device that will go directly into their file and get flagged for address by the nursing team.

By adding the recognition component, staff can recognize each other while the positive behavior is taking place. Healthcare work is high stress and burnout, often with low recognition during a daily grind. Hopefully, this will help make some of the tougher days a little better by taking a moment to pause and give thanks. Read the full release here.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for stories like this. Kansas City Royals all-star catcher Salvador Perez joined a neighborhood wiffle ball game and gave the local kids an experience they'll treasure forever. If you want to read some good news for a change, check out the full story.
Wikipedia of the Week - The Lorax

History, mystery and more from my wanderings on Wikipedia

Of course, I had to do a deep dive into the Lorax this week. Since I was a kid, I always liked this story. Now that I'm older, I realize that I have a lot in common with the Lorax. We're around the same height and build and like to raise a red flag and question if something is getting out of hand.

Dr. Suess wrote The Lorax in 1971 as a way to get kids more informed and energized in protecting their environment against corporate greed. My kids haven't forced me to watch it yet, but it was also adapted into a movie starring Danny Devito as the Lorax. I'm in no rush as it's got a whopping 54% on Rotten Tomatoes.

You can go down the rabbit hole and learn the full history of The Lorax by reading its wiki here.
