Digitisation in the Apparel Manufacturing Industry: 68% of Textile Workers Overcome Fear of Speaking Up

Eighty percent of India's workforce comprises blue-collar workers, with 45 million in the apparel and textile industry. This sector significantly contributes to the nation's GDP, providing vital employment. However, it faces high attrition rates, around 10% monthly, leading to operational costs for companies.
Shahi Exports, India's largest apparel manufacturer, and Good Business Lab, a renowned labor research organization, joined forces to tackle this challenge. Their collaborative research yielded promising results-workers who were given a voice were 20% less likely to leave, a significant reduction in turnover and absenteeism.
Nearly 68% of textile workers hesitate to voice concerns due to fear of repercussions, language barriers, and other factors, which may lead to dissatisfaction. Digital tools, which are anonymous and digital and allow for two-way communication, can address this gap. For example, suggestion boxes, though anonymous, do not allow workers to track resolutions, which may lead workers to feel unheard and underserved.
Inache, developed by Good Business Lab, offers a unique channel that can supplement existing mechanisms. Inache allows workers to share feedback anonymously and directly with HR or supervisors. Piloted at Shahi Exports, it enables voice and text messages, empowering workers and improving factory dynamics. It ensures anonymity and accessibility, bridging the digital divide with simple phone calls. Inache accommodates multiple regional languages, simplifying the feedback process and eliminating barriers to expression and fear of reprisal.
Tools like Inache benefit both workers and employers. It digitizes the communication process for factory HR teams and offers real-time insights into workforce issues, enabling proactive responses. By fostering an open feedback environment and using human-centric tools like Inache, businesses can address worker concerns effectively, improving well-being and shop floor dynamics. This approach contributes to a more transparent supply chain, which is crucial for sustaining growth and fostering a positive workplace culture.
