    New C-Suite Intelligence podcast features The Miles Group’s Managing Directors Courtney Hamilton and Christina Woodard on how to navigate the onboarding process


     “Derailment rates for executives in transition, particularly in senior level roles, is much higher because they don’t always have the proper understanding of the degree of difficulty related to a given transition,” says Courtney Hamilton, Managing Director of The Miles Group/TMG.
     
    The new C-Suite Intelligence podcast episode, “Onboarding Into a Senior Role” features Hamilton alongside Christina Woodard, Managing Director of TMG, on how to develop an effective onboarding plan.
     
    “People often are anchored on this idea of a 90-day plan,” says Hamilton. “It’s really the first year that you have to be thoughtful about planning in totality because you might have a very prescriptive 90-day plan” but what happens after that?
     
    “Begin with a diagnostic of the business, build alignment on the mandate, and connect with different stakeholders,” they recommend.
     
    “Oftentimes, when an executive comes into a new role, they’re thinking about themselves. ‘What do I need to do? What do I need to focus on? What do I need to deliver?’ That’s actually the wrong framing,” says Woodard. “The better framing is to think about your counterpart” and intentionally reset the relationship with them in terms of cadence, content, and focus areas – all while signaling your leadership style and listening.
     
    “The number one reason new CEOs or leaders are held back is that people are not aligned either with their vision or their approach,” says Hamilton. “This might mean that you edit your approach as you seek and take advice and you triangulate from others.”
     
    Prioritization of time is also a key factor to one’s onboarding success. “Make sure what you’re saying yes to is aligned with your desired outcomes for that course of the year.” Hamilton adds, “Create thinking time along the way and time for yourself to rest and recover and continue to build your stamina.”
