We spend a large portion of our lives at work, so it's really no surprise that companies think of their employees as a "team" or a "family." With that closeness in mind, it can be nerve-wracking when a valued team member is going through a personal struggle or milestone, such as navigating their partner's imminent military or job relocation. You'll want to not only support that employee, but also figure out how to retain them, so that the company doesn't lose a top performer.
Tips for Retaining an Employee
1. Offer an Ear
One of the most powerful steps you can take toward employee retention is being there for your employees — for work-related goals and otherwise. Offer support to your employee. A simple email, meeting, or check-in can remind them that you care and are here to make the process easier.
2. Let Them Work Remotely
Their partner might be moving states — if not countries — for their job relocation. If kids are involved, it makes it even harder for your employee to stay local and remain in the office. With the recent pandemic, many work policies have changed to offer flexible and remote work options. Reminding your employee that this opportunity is available to them will save them (and you) a lot of stress, while opening up the door to continued partnership.
3. Hire a Military Real Estate Agent
When your employee is going through such a life change, they're likely under a tremendous amount of stress. They might have to sell their current home and/or buy a new one. Offer to find them a military real estate agent to help make their move easier. Offering them additional help will ease their mind, strengthen your relationship, and remind them that you're all a family and a team — ready to do what is necessary for one another.
The best thing you can do to retain an employee whose partner is asked to relocate is provide support. They will thank you for it and so will your company.
