    Promoting From Within vs. Hiring Externally


    Your employees are critical to your company. The success of the business depends on their ability to perform their jobs well, bringing their talent, creativity, and hard work to each project or task. When you’re hiring, one of the first actions you take is evaluating talent needs so you can find new workers that can meet the demands of your business. But have you stopped to consider whether bringing on new people is the right move? Do you have pools of untapped talent among the employees you already have on the payroll?

    When Promoting From Within Is the Right Move
    Not all employees give 100% of their talent and creativity at their jobs. An article from Harvard Business Review reports that “diminishing” managers, or those who focus only on self-generated ideas rather than those generated by the team around them, utilize less than half of the abilities and intelligence of their direct reports. 
     
    Before you brush off this idea, thinking that you aren’t such a manager, consider this: the average executive manager makes use of only 66% of the talents, creativity, and abilities of their staff. When you combine that with the fact that under-used employees tend to feel frustrated in their jobs, you may find you have  a disaster in front of you or a golden opportunity.
     
    Training your managers to become “multipliers” teaches them to highlight and foster the abilities of those around them rather than stifling them. In other words, make use of the capabilities your employees have before you start looking externally for additional new hires. The benefits are that your employees will work harder and likely feel more satisfied in their positions and you’ll build a reputation as a supportive manager. The benefit to your company with this approach is that it will be a more desirable place to work, so that when you are ready to hire, finding the right person won’t be as difficult because the culture of your company and your team will be at its best.


    When To Look Outside the Company For Hires
    Bringing new talent into the company is still very attractive because new hires bring a fresh perspective and unique skills. They may also have specific training, education, and experience that are essential to the position. And if the employees you have really are operating at full capacity and can’t meet any additional demands, new hires bring an opportunity to revive the work/life balance of your current staff. When you’re ready to hire new talent, just make sure the integration process is as seamless as possible so that new employees immediately feel connected, valued, and part of the team.
