A recent blog post I saw posed a question,- “Does your organization understand the real value of its L&D function and realize how big an impact learning has on the full talent lifecycle?” According to the post, learning and development (L&D) can play a pivotal role in three key areas:
recruitment/attraction,
enabling people to build their skills and behaviors and developing their capability to deliver on business goals, and finally,
retention. I actually couldn’t agree more - we need to look beyond learning and development teams as being solely about building the capability of its people.
Recruitment
Why will the best and the brightest want to come work with you? Sure, money and benefits will be high on the list, but we’re seeing a definite shift in candidates wanting to know how they can build and improve their skills, and grow in the organization. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen many job descriptions that say, “we have awesome learning opportunities where you can build amazing skills and forge a great career.”
Building skills and behaviors
This is the traditional view of L&D and will remain a critical function. However, it’s time for that view to evolve and allow L&D to have a wider impact on the organization. Build and expand a strong learning offering and you might be surprised by how much more engaged your employees are, and their growth will fuel the company’s growth.
Retention
It’s definitely a job seeker’s market, so with the many choices candidates have today what can you do about people leaving your organization? Again, the natural inclination would be to throw more money at someone wanting to leave. But for many, money isn’t the be-all end-all. L&D has the power to show people what they could be missing out on if they decide to see if the grass is greener on the other side, especially if the driving factors for leaving are a lack of growth opportunities or a desire to build their skills through different projects.
