Background:
Beyond messages of solidarity with the Black community, and donations to Black community organizations, there needs to be more! We know there are Anti-Black Racism sentiments in Canadian tech and innovation, and we must go beyond one-time statements. One of the many things in the sphere of influence for corporations is their ability to hire, retain, and promote Black talent, and to ensure that they eradicate Racism from their hiring and promotion processes. Until they do that, then those statements are just communications exercises.
We’ve had much movement from leading companies, and are excited to work side by side with our partners on this critical issue. We also know that there are still opportunities to innovate and transform how we look at the issue of Anti-Black Racism in tech. This is our moment to do it!
As the largest network of Black tech in Canada, with over 10,000 members, and partnered with many leading tech companies, we have a unique perspective on how to advance the attraction, hiring, retention and promotion of Black tech talent.
We will not move the needle until we reduce the “network gap”, which happens as a result of the disconnection between Black tech and other tech professionals. This helps to maintain the lack of diversity in tech. Intentionally diversifying the network of the “people leaders” within tech is the way to reduce the network gap and increase the attraction, recruitment, retention and promotion of Black tech professionals. We are excited and look forward to working side by side with these partners and others to advance the cause.
