Do managers deserve a pat on the back? It depends on whom you ask, according to new research from staffing firm OfficeTeam. While the majority of workers surveyed (79 per cent) said they're happy with their bosses, just over 1 in 5 respondents gave their leaders less-than-stellar reviews.

More than two in five respondents (42 per cent) feel their manager is a good leader, and more than one-quarter consider their boss a mentor (27 per cent) and friend (26 per cent). But not everyone shares these sentiments: 15 per cent said their supervisor is a micromanager and 13 per cent went as far as saying he or she is incompetent.

"It's important that mangers recognize the impact of their role as leaders in establishing positive work relationships, and supporting the satisfaction, performance and engagement of their employees," said Koula Vasilopoulos, a district president for OfficeTeam. "Successful leaders are those who take an active interest in their staff's professional development and career growth, and encourage greater autonomy over projects, to inspire increased confidence, productivity and overall commitment to the business."

The survey was developed by OfficeTeam and conducted by an independent research firm. It includes responses from more than 570 workers 18 years of age or older and employed in office environments in Canada.
